CEC wins Top Environmental Award

CEC has been awarded the 2021 Environmental Award for Overall Contribution to Sound Management Practices in Industry by the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA).

The coveted accolade was bestowed on the Company in recognition of its sustained regulatory compliance in the last two years, a demonstrated commitment to continuous environmental improvement through timely statutory returns within limits and utilisation of Best Available Technology Not entailing Excessive Cost (BATNET) and Best Environmental Practices (BEP). Its corporate social responsibility that promotes sound environmental management was another attribute of the award.

ZEMA Acting Director General, Mr. Simon Mwansa, said:

“We particularly note your efforts in the phase out of PCB containing electrical equipment from your operations and massive investment in solar energy aimed at promoting a diversified energy mix.”

In 2002, CEC became the first Zambian power utility to be free of environmentally harmful polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) by removing all PCB carrying components from its network. ZEMA announced the award at its annual Environmental and Climate Change Awards ceremony virtually held on 3 September 2021.
