CEC Career Opportunity: Engineer – SCADA

VAC-2024-0020: ENGINEER – SCADA

Grade: CEC 6 | Contract Type: Permanent | Location: Kitwe

This role is responsible for providing an efficient, reliable and effective SCADA network through planning, designing, directing, and implementing of condition-based maintenance and repair of all SCADA equipment/facilities vital for a continuous supply of electricity to CEC customers. The position will report to the Senior Engineer SCADA.

Key Accountabilities

  • Plan, develop and implement efficient and effective condition-based maintenance.
  • Reduce the downtime of critical SCADA equipment connected to the system by quick restoration of service in order to maintain system integrity and enhance system security.
  • Document emergency preparedness and exercises regularly.
  • Make system and data backups and ensure up-to-date off-site storage.
  • Optimize the availability of critical spares.
  • Ensure 100% availability of SCADA inverter systems.
  • Develop effective equipment condition-monitoring programs through SCADA system studies, equipment performance, worldwide technological developments, obsolescence of installed equipment and engineer modifications to the system network to meet revised requirements.
  • Formulate budget estimates/expenditure for the section and review recurrent expenditures to ensure compliance to guidelines and approved budgets.
  • Proactively ensure all SCADA network and drawings are up to date.
  • Ensure optimum availability of spares and control of resources i.e. labour, transport and material to support condition-based maintenance, repair of faulty equipment and installation assignments to sustain operations.
  • Undertake specific SCADA network projects as required to meet company operating requirements in a timely and cost effective manner.
  • Train, develop and motivate subordinates in order to improve individual proficiency and core competence to enhance engineering standards in the section.
  • Promote, Foster and ensure adherence to statutory and domestic safety rules and regulations in particular those relating to safe working practices in order to minimize injury to personnel and damage to company assets and environment.

Technical Expertise

  • The candidate should be able to demonstrate proficiency in power utility protocols such as IEC61850 and IEC60870-5-104.
  • The candidate should have the ability to integrate SCADA systems with various hardware components and other software systems.
  • The candidate should be able to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of Substation automation systems and subsystems which should include RTUs, HMIs, substation annunciating units and SCADA network switches.
  • Understanding of networking principles, including TCP/IP, and protocols used in SCADA communication.
  • Should understand how SCADA systems apply to energy industries.
  • Understand industrial processes and possess hands-on experience of products, solutions, and technologies used by leading power utility vendors, including HITACHI, GE, and NR Electric (China).
  • Develop strong troubleshooting skills for diagnosing issues in SCADA systems.
  • Awareness of cybersecurity measures critical to protecting SCADA networks from threats.
  • Effective collaboration with colleagues and cross-functional teams.
  • Familiar with the use of Microsoft Office Suite, which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and more.

To be successful in this role, you will be required to have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Telecommunications Engineering, or equivalent.
  • Professional and relevant certification is an added advantage.
  • At least 5 years post-graduate experience.
  • Project management.
  • Technical planning – robustness, stability, scaling, security, etc of technology solutions.
  • Knowledge of ABB Network Manager SCADA System and Remote Terminal Units will be an added advantage.
