CEC | CEO presentation at 2018 Caminex
Below are extracts from the presentation by Owen Silavwe CEO/Managing Director at the 2018 CAMINEX .
Background
2015 – 2016
- Low water levels in the dam reservoirs impacted power availability in the country
- Zambia was forced to look to more expensive options to meet its power requirements
- Measures implemented included load shedding, expensive imports, demand side management
- At peak the country saw a shortfall in supply of more than 700MW while overall the demand remained suppressed
- Supply deficit encouraged the country to consider new and alternative supply options e.g. PV
Post 2017
- Water situation has improved substantially, the country has enough power to meet its demand
- Force majeure declared during the last 3 years has been lifted allowing national demand to be met from national sources
- Between 2007 and 2016, national demand grew from 1605MW to about 2005MW, an average growth rate of almost 3% per annum
- In 2018, national demand is forecast to exceed 2200MW
