CEC solar project curriculum development component applauded

Kitwe City Mayor, Christopher Kang’ombe, says the curriculum development component of CEC’s Riverside Solar PV power plant will enhance the value of the country’s education system.

Mr. Kang’ombe made the observation when he toured CEC’s maiden solar power plant on Tuesday, 17th April.

CEC has successfully completed the construction of its maiden 1MW and Zambia’s first grid-scale solar photovoltaic power plant located in Riverside, Kitwe. The project is also supporting human capacity development in solar technology development and management at CEC and the Copperbelt University (CBU). CEC has partnered with the German development agency, GIZ, who is supporting solar technology curriculum development for the CBU.

The Mayor described the project as a game-changer in the education sector, with potential to transform the City into an academic hub and Zambia into a destination of choice for solar technology education in the SADC region.

“We are proud of this development as a City and are confident that Kitwe will now be seen from a different perspective”, he said.

In addition to other project benefits such as the provision of an alternative source of energy and job creation, he noted that it will also provide students access to first-hand technical knowledge and experience of renewable energy technology, given its strategic location next to CBU.

The solar PV power plant, the first of its kind to be successfully implemented in Zambia, is set for commissioning on Friday, 20th April.
