Copperbelt Energy Corporation Launches “Help Protect Our Power Infrastructure, Preserve Our Community” Campaign to Combat Cable Theft

Lusaka, September 26, 2024 – The Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) has launched a new community-focused campaign titled ‘Help Protect Our Power Infrastructure, Preserve Our Community: Report Cable Theft & Vandalism Today!’ to combat the increasing incidents of power cable theft and vandalism. The campaign aims to safeguard CEC’s infrastructure, which is crucial for maintaining reliable power supply and ensuring the safety and economic stability of the Copperbelt Province.

The initiative highlights the severe impact of cable theft and vandalism on the broader community. Disruptions in power supply can significantly hinder mining operations, endanger lives, and create economic challenges for the region and the country at large. Additionally, perpetrators face harsh penalties, including up to 10 years in prison and life imprisonment if these actions result in fatalities.

“This campaign is designed to engage and empower the public to report any suspicious activities and collaborate with law enforcement to prevent further theft and vandalism,” said CEC Managing Director, Owen Silavwe. “The consequences of these crimes extend beyond financial loss; they compromise the safety of workers and the continuity of essential services.”

CEC is partnering with law enforcement agencies, neighbourhood watch groups, local businesses, and schools to spread the message across the province. Stakeholders are encouraged to participate in community events, Q&A sessions, and interactive workshops, which will be key components of the campaign to foster greater collaboration and shared responsibility.

CEC believes that with collective action, incidents of cable theft and vandalism can be significantly reduced, thereby preserving the integrity of power infrastructure, and contributing to the prosperity of Zambia.
