In his presentation, Mr. Mwandemena discussed some of the factors driving the increase in cross border power trade, challenges associated with regional power flows and potential solutions.
He cited climate change as one of the major causes of water scarcity resulting in energy deficit for power utilities that are predominantly hydropower generation based in the region.
The presentation noted that adequate transmission capacity and affordability were seen as some of the challenges to regional power flows during this deficit period.
Competitive tariffs, alternative off-taker arrangements and use of new and modern technologies are some of the solutions offered to mitigate the effect of drought on regional power flows.
