Vacancy | Protection Technician
The Copperbelt Energy Corporation Plc (CEC) is an independent power supply, transmission, and distribution Company with interests in closely linked businesses, including fibre optic telecommunications, in Zambia and the Sub-Saharan African region.
CEC is inviting applications from suitably qualified, innovative and dynamic individuals to take up the position of Protection Technician at our Head Office in Kitwe.
Job Purpose
To support the installation, maintenance and repairs of protection equipment in order to ensure reliability and stability in the operations of protection schemes.
Key Accountabilities
- Perform initial inspections and conduct trouble shooting on all types of protection relays and other substation protection equipment.
- Carry out calibration of relays to ensure they operate within their specification.
- Carry out condition based maintenance of protection schemes to ensure smooth operations of protection systems in times of fault.
- Perform functional tests on protection schemes, as appropriate, to ensure that they satisfy performance requirements and specifications.
- Carry out repair of protections schemes and their relays in order to put back defective schemes in operation.
- Participate in the installation and commissioning of protection schemes for the purposes of upgrading existing schemes and meeting new load expansions.
- Undertake preventive measures for unsafe practices; conduct tool box talks before every activity is undertaken.
Technical Skills
- Considerable knowledge of wiring, diagrams, schematics and electrical symbols.
- Sound knowledge of the theory and operating characteristics of associated types of protection equipment and substations equipment.
- Hands-on basic skill in electricity and electronics as applied to electrical wiring, power and meters.

Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum: Grade 12 Certificate.
- Desirable: Technician Certificate in Electrical, Electronics or Instrumentation.
- Accreditation: Registered Technician of Engineering Institution of Zambia.
- Experience: Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a role and context of similar complexity.
