Vacancy | Survey Assistant

The Copperbelt Energy Corporation Plc (CEC) is an independent power supply, transmission, and distribution Company with interests in closely linked businesses, including fibre optic telecommunications, in Zambia and the Sub-Saharan African region.

CEC is inviting applications from suitably qualified, innovative and dynamic individuals to take up the position of Survey Assistant at our Head Office in Kitwe.

Job Purpose

To assist the Survey Technologist in the design and production of civil and survey drawings in order to facilitate construction and maintenance of engineering works.

Key Accountabilities

  • Organise survey expeditions including arranging survey equipment, logistics and applying relevant organisational requirements.
  • Undertake survey expeditions and works such as clearing vegetation and debris and pegging out boundaries to facilitate measurements.
  • Perform survey data collection and organise equipment and supplies.
  • Assist in measuring angles, distances and elevations using such tools as measuring tape, steel band or digital equipment (using GPS).
  • Transport, assemble, dismantle and maintain survey equipment.
  • Collect survey data in the field, record field notes and measurements using an array of tools.
  • Regularly check survey equipment for compliance with safety and operating requirements and report faults to the Survey Technologist.
  • Download digital survey data and assist in the preparation of survey plans, sketches, layouts and drawings in compliance with national and international standards and other codes of practice.
  • Assist in the storage and retrieval of survey plans, control marks and existing infrastructure information including projects.
  • Accurately complete all documentation associated with data collection and processing including registration, filing and copying of survey plans and related documentation.
  • Carry out initial site investigations in conjunction with relevant officials to ensure the complete understanding of the engineering requirements to facilitate the preparation of accurate drawings.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in the use of survey equipment.
  • Knowledgeable in AutoCAD software usage.
  • Competent in Geographical Information System (GIS).
  • Familiar with applicable land legislation.
  • Physically fit and adept at working outdoors in all weather conditions and industrial work settings.
  • Proven knowledge in survey practices and principles and cartographic methods and standards.
  • Proficiency in the operation and maintenance of survey instruments, equipment, data collectors and GPS receivers.
  • Demonstrated commitment to occupational health and safety standards, environmental responsibility and sustainable operations.

Leadership and Behavioural Skills

  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to ask for and follow the instructions of supervisors.
  • Team player with good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and customers.
  • High degree of public relations skills as the job involves interfacing with internal and external customers.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum: Grade 12 Certificate with 5 ‘O’ Levels.
  • Desirable: Technician Certificate in Land Surveying or equivalent.
  • Accreditation: Member of Surveyors’ Institute of Zambia.
  • Experience: 3 years’ experience in land surveying and construction.
