The stigma and superstition that surround disability in many countries can make it challenging for families with disabled children to find support and resources. Wukwashi Wa Nzambi, a center for children with disabilities, was created to help fill this gap. With limited resources, the center provides a safe space for children to learn and play, and for parents to connect with others who share their experiences.
But thanks to the unexpected support of Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC), Wukwashi has been able to transform its services and facilities. The company, which provides electricity to Zambia’s Copperbelt region, has donated water, physiotherapy equipment, recreation facilities, and kitchen equipment to the center.
The impact of this support has been profound. In just one year, the center’s school enrollment has doubled, and it is now able to provide physiotherapy to 50 children per week. Over 500 children have benefited from the center’s services, and children from across the country have been able to access medical attention at Wukwashi.
For the parents and children who rely on Wukwashi, the support of CEC has been life-changing. “What they have done is life-changing for many of the children,” says Joyce Mutembu, who works at the center. “Even though they can’t say it all the time but what they have done is they have shown love, they have transformed many lives of children with disabilities by giving them a good and loving future because of the infrastructure they have given Wukwashi.”
CEC’s support has not only improved the lives of the children and families who rely on Wukwashi, but it has also raised the profile of the center and helped to reduce the stigma and taboo that often surround disability. The company’s actions demonstrate the power of corporate social responsibility and how businesses can make a significant impact on the communities they serve.
